In the “vertical perspective” style of ancient Chinese landscape painting (they were doing landscapes a thousand years before the Europeans), receding elements are simply stacked in diminishing size to give the illusion of perspective without the bother of plotting three dimensional vanishing lines (which my Architecture professors were under the illusion that I could easily construct). This allows more latitude in laying in elements that flow through the work while maintaining a “believable” picture. Thus, a continuous void encompassing sky, fog, and surface water flows from top to bottom representing the Tao which flows through all things. I will leave it to the observer to perceive the sentimental simplicity of the setting in his or her own way.
