Much borrowed in style from the old school Chinese landscape tradition (the Chinese having been doing landscape painting a thousand years before the Europeans took it up). Not knowing the proper vocabulary, I call the method of rendering distance “vertical perspective”; it is not a true perspective with vanishing points, etc., but rather a stacking of elements of relative diminishing scale and detail that void can comfortably flow through – primitive (which fits my talents) but very believable.
